Is it possible to receive Martin Sheen's address? In the 80's he sent a message to my mother when she was recovering from hip surgery. (He had invited me to see him in Julius Caesar in NYC, and I had to cancel in order to care for her.) Never in my life have I written to a celebrity, because I have always thought that it is quite funny that people write to someone they do not know at all…

But today I found out that I am about to become one of those odd people who do write to total strangers, and that is because I read your interview in Reader’s Digest www-pages. The interview really touched me and made me look at my daughter and myself in a different way than before.

First of all, I do have apologize because of my English. I live in Finland, so my English is not perfect and sometimes I use “wrong words” because I do not know the “right” ones. I hope that does not make this letter impossible to read.

I am a 30 years old mother from Finland. I have two daughters (3 & 5 years) and the younger one (named Suvi) was injured at birth. Because of a difficult delivery she got something that is called OBPI (Obstetrical Brachial Plexus Injury) or Erb’s palsy in her left arm. It means that during birth her left shoulder got stuck behind my pelvic bone and she had to be pulled out with great force. That caused an injury to the brachial plexus (a network of nerves that control the motor and sensory functions in the arm and hand). Because in my daughter’s case the injury was severe, she had to undergo a difficult microsurgery to repair the nerve damage at the age of 2 months. After that she has had therapy every week.

Right now she is 3 years old. She has regained some function in her arm and hand, but there are still many movements that are missing. And always will be. Also because of the nerve damage and muscle atrophy her arm is little a bit over 1 inch shorter than the other one (3,5 cm). It is also thinner and the hand is smaller.

The way you described your arm in the RD interview, sounds very much like my daughter and other people who have OBPI. The severity of the lesions varies a lot, so some have more function than others.

It was very touching for me to learn about your arm because it really (once again) showed me that it is not the disability but ability that matters. It was a funny feeling to learn that someone you admire and see on the TV and movies actually has an injury similar to my child. (The West Wing has been in the Finnish TV too, thank god we do not have dubbing!!)

I (as most parents) have been worried about how my daughter will “make it” in life. Will the injury affect her social life? What if she wants a job she can not do because of the injury? How will she be able to take care of her own children? Will she feel different? Is it going to be difficult for her to face the fact that in sports she will not be able to perform as well as others?

Much like your father I always have thought that she has to learn to work with her mind, not her body. After reading the interview I hope I will change that thinking and try to let her to be the master in her own life and future (when that time comes….)

The day that my second daughter was born changed my life. It was quite difficult to accept the fact that ones child is injured because something has gone wrong in prenatal care or birthing process. The anger and bitterness was almost overwhelming. Luckily I was able to let go of those negative feelings and move forward. I think it was important because I did not want to raise my child to be bitter and angry.

One of the most important things was that I was able to get in touch with other people in the same situation. For some time the only people I got in contact with were in the internet, in few months I also met other mothers and children here in Finland and we formed an association. That has kept me busy for almost three years now and given me the opportunity to make a difference. So there has been sunny sides to all the tragedy as well.

And of course… I always try to remind myself that there are so many things I can be grateful for. My daughter is so much more than just one arm and hand. And reading your interview reminded me of that.

I am not sure if the injury in your arm is a brachial plexus injury, but never the less, I am glad that all the kids and teenagers have someone like you to look up to. It is important for kids to have heroes. And I am sure that many kids see you as their hero, especially now that they know that you have gone through same difficulties than they have.

It can be transmuted on site into non-radioactive elements. ******** In the first 50 years of the atomic age nuclear waste has already leaked out into our precious ground water at the Hanford nuclear reservation and is irretrievable. Solid medium burial of high level nuclear waste was tried at the Russian Ural Mountain waste dump, it exploded in 1957 heavily contaminating the area. Yucca Mountain is supposed to contain nuclear waste for 10,000 years. Safe and secure burial of high level nuclear waste for 486,000 years, 20 half-lives of plutonium 239, is a scientific impossibility. There is a viable alternative to geologic isolation. High level nuclear waste can be transmuted into non-radioactive elements using existing infrastructure, commercially available machinery and current supporting technology. In addition, as the treated isotope rapidly decays into a non-radioactive element, heat is produced which can power the existing electric generators at each nuclear power plant where nuclear waste is stored in cooling ponds. The late Dr. Roy estimated cost in 1979 at $80 million dollars to construct the Roy Process pilot facility and should take three years to build. There remains about a years work calculating engineering parameters for the pilot plant. Transmuting high level waste would also guarantee international security by eliminating bomb grade elements.

Dear Martin, I have alway's thought alot of your son Charlie, dispite his past. He has alway's been a hero in my book. And very handsome one at that. If there would have been anyway to get personally in touch with him, I would have done so. But , I do want to say, from what I have read, you have been a very, very devoted father to Charlie. And he is very grateful to have a father like you. My father, passed away back in 1994. He died of cancer. But he had a masive heart attack prior to that, but they brought him back. I have built prototypes, and have used one on my vehicle for three years even in big cities, and always felt comfortable that my car would always be there where I parked it. I also installed one on an old truck in an auto wreaker and it took three big men 4min. 56 seconds to remove it, only by braking the floorboard because of too ridged a base. This has since been redesigned to be flexible. It was encouraging to see one person could not remove it. It is loose enough installed, that it cannot be cut with a hacksaw, since it is made with good strong steel. The lock cannot be frozen because it is incased with steel and a small air space. These men ! tried with hammers and feet to remove it and only exhausted themselves. Since joy rides and theft of vehicles for the purpose of committing a crime are the main reasons for general auto theft, I know this will be a very good and secure type of vehicle theft deterrent. I have a U.S. patent and applied for an international patent with the help of a company in Ireland, who have done up for me a confidential research report, on North America, and Europe and are at this time trying to find manufactures all around the world that would be interested in building this device that I call "Brake Lock. There is some simple electronics that serve as a trade mark, as well as takes care of the brake light problem. I recently have had interest from England and Illinois and hope to get a positive response from them. Auto theft is a huge problem everywhere. I know it will make a difference. But it will only make a difference if people will use it. I was lucky enough to share a wonderful experience with you in 1960 or so when we worked together at the Living Theatre for Julian Beck and Judith Malina. Although I stage-managed "The Connection" for a while, I did a very little bit of acting and some directing. For years, I kept a clipping from the New York Times that listed the two of us in a review of "An Evening of Yeats". I now understand it was your first professional appearance in New York. I can't remember the name of the man who played your father (Leonard ?) but Rosemary McDonald and I played your mother and father in a non-speaking flashback vision of the night of your conception years before.

I followed your career with great interest and have been moved by a number of your performances but for some reason, your portrayal of the simple carver of holy statues, "santos" I think they are called, who became caught up in a political struggle he did not understand remains vivid in my memory after what must be thirty years.

You said you were protesting "Star Wars Defense weapons in space" Well I hate to say but SDI is pretty much a dead issue. What you probably were protesting is NDM National Defense Missile when you were arrested at Vandenberg. To the last: Thank you. I am still active duty(14 years now) While it is true that some of the draw downs started under Bush Sr. The cold war is far from over, we still have missiles of full alert ready to go. It's good that we can agree to disagree. None of us in the military want a war. However, we will wage it if called upon. I have no problem with it if American lives and assets are in danger. Under the last 8 years of the current administration the military has been streached to the point by peacekeeping missions in countrys that have been killing each other for 100s of years. When we went into Kosovo I was a little irritated. We had no business there. Bush jr promices to pull troops from peacekeeping missions. Bush jr has also promiced a 7.4 % pay raise. That has not happened since president Reagan in the early 80s. Sure these are promices, but during the campain I did not hear Gore saying anything positive towards inproving our way of life. Bush was constantly talking about it. The National Missile Defense program is another area where I disagree with Mr. Sheen. If Russia was so interested in disarmaliment then why did they just build and deploy a new missile? Why are they looking into an interceptor system themselves? Way before we ever anounced ours. Korea, Iraq and Iran will be able to hit Washington or LA in the next decade. The National Missile Defense system will never be able to stop a large scale attack. That is not the intention. The military is here for a reason. I thought to myself when I saw a protest 2 years ago that those people are there because of what we have worked to defend. If they were to try that in China, they would get tank tracks on their forehead. I just smiled and went on my way. Sure we have our problems but there is no other place I would want to call home. Mr. Sheen and Baldwin need to think about that before saying they will leave.

Hi, I'm the poster before you to whom you referred. Believe it or not, I do care about you in the military quite a bit. Unlike Mr. Sheen, I am not a pacifist. I do agree with and admire a lot of what he says, but I certainly don't think he's infallible (I'm not given to idol worship)

I simply object to some of the mindless obscenity that passes for criticism that I have found here. But your points are well taken.

My father was a disabled veteran from WWII - the greatest generation. Many of my friends served in Vietnam and I used to volunteer at a Vietnam Vets of Amercia Center.

And I do appreciate all the military does to protect our rights. Part of that though is giving those with whom you disagree the space to exercise those rights. When those with whom disagree say things you dislike, at least take pride that they are safe to say it because of your sacrifices. You are a success because we can all speak out.

As for George W. Bush being your last hope, that I do disagree with. The trend toward cutting military funding actually began under George H. Bush. After the Cold War ended, the government began to spend less on military weapons because they felt there was less of a military threat and the country was in a recession. That combination made cuts look attractive. GHB presided over the last recession this country has had and that helped contribute to the underfunding of the military.

Many of the weapons that were state of the art then are now obsolete and we do need to fund the next generation of weapons. And we certainly need to upgrade the pay and living standards of those who sacrifice so much to protect us.

That's not what Mr. Sheen protests. He is opposed to war itself, not just in the U.S. but anywhere. He protests the School of The Americas because several prominent Latin American dictators learned their tactics of torture there. Roberto D'Aubisson, one of the most notorious graduates, was responsible for the death of nuns, priests and even an archbishop in El Salvador. Another graduate was Manuel Norriega who is now serving time in a U.S. prison because he paid our generosity to him back by flooding our country with drugs.

Many people here are angry at Mr. Sheen for his pacifism and liberal stands, but he also opposes any softening of drug laws. Based on his own tragic experiences with substance abuse and those of his son, nobody is more anti-drug use than he is. So, in a recently California referendum issue, he came out on the conservative law and order side.

All human beings are more nuanced than the labels we wish to apply to demonize them. I consider myself a liberal too, but here I am strongly in favor of the military, though not necessarily the past abuses of the School of the Americas.

People who throw easy labels and cheap obscenities out at others only show their own inadequacy as thinkers. Your post, however, made good points. We may disagree, but at least I can answer you in a civil and rational way and appreciate where you are coming from.

By the way, good luck in all your endeavors. I gather you are still in the military. Have a happy holiday season and may the Lord keep you and yours safe.

Martin, I am so disappointed in your stance with the current administration. I have to at least share my feelings about a couple of issues with you. I will tell you honestly that I had considered you my favorite actor along with Michael Douglas. Both you and Mr. Douglas have really let us down. I rented many of your movies more than once, as well as bought the movie Gettysburg. I realize that you choose the issues that are the most important to you, but some of them are very controversial. I think that the kicker was seeing you with Clinton. To be honest, I was crushed. Now I have to pick and choose very carefully who I choose as my favorite actor/actresses. Other than your association with a tainted admisitration, I still like you as a person, and consider you to be an exceptional actor. VISTA DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Martin Sheen, America's favorite prime-time president, told a group at a California treatment center Saturday that he thinks George W. Bush is a "white-knuckle drunk."

In his speech, Sheen said he was concerned that the Republican presidential candidate never received counseling after a 1976 arrest for drunken driving.

"He's still in denial about it," said Sheen, a vocal supporter of Bush's rival, vice-president Al Gore. "You have got to be in a program. I did not make up the rules about that."

Throughout his campaign, Bush deflected questions about drinking and drug abuse by admitting he made mistakes while young and emphasizing that he gave up alcohol at age 40.

Sheen, who plays fictional President Josiah Bartlett on NBC's political drama "The West Wing," said he is a recovering substance abuser himself and does not mean to insult Bush but to force him to acknowledge the severity of drug and alcohol dependence.

Mr. Sheen,

Actually, I doubt Martin Sheen reads these messages. But this is to those who do come to this message board.

Some of the responses to Mr. Sheen's HCI ad have been so rude that it's astounding. I don't agree with Charleton Heston and the NRA but I would never dream of calling Mr. Heston insulting names. I respect him as an actor and a citizen with a right to hold an opinion different from mine. And no I won't boycott his work just because I don't agree with him. And I certainly wouldn't berate his family or gloat over personal tragedies.

Martin Sheen is a very fine actor who deserves the same respect. Actually all human beings do.

Further, I applaud his efforts. The notion that one writer expressed that those who are in favor of gun control are un-American is ludicrous. My father is a disabled World War II veteran who brought me up to have respect for my country and I consider myself as patriotic as the next guy.

Also, I don't want to take guns out of the hands of hunters or anybody. That would be gun banning. I'm in favor of control not banning guns and there is a difference. I don't want to see guns get so easily into the hands of criminals, mentally ill people or those who don't know how to use them properly.

What is wrong with a three day waiting period, gun registration and even gun licensing? We make drivers prove that they know what they are doing before allowing them on a highway. Shouldn't gun owners have to show competence as part of the privelege of owning a gun?

And yes, it's a privelege. Not a right. The Second Amendment refers to a state's right to maintain an armed standing militia (you know, like a National Guard) not the right of everybody to arm themselves with AK-47s and Uzis. If you need an Uzi to shoot a deer, let me teach you how to aim and shoot better. Yes, I do know how to use a gun, thank you very much.

But I wouldn't want one in my house with young children present. I don't like hunting. But if others do, fine with me. But if I'm un-American so are the hundreds of thousands of women who attended the Million Mom march. I think we just want a safer world for our children.

Oh, and a little politeness for those who disagree with our opinions would go a long way for all of us.

Mr. Sheen: I have been a fan of yours and your sons for a number of years. I find it disturbing that you would do a commercial for HCI without considering that there are a number of your fans who have seen many of your movies that involve the use of guns, such as Apocalypse Now, and these movies have fueled the desire to use weapons such as the AR15 and the Colt .45 responsibly and recreationally. I do not like anyone trying to take away or limit my recreational use of firearms. All of my firearms are kept in a safe away from children and criminals. Unfortunately, well-intentioned legislators and Hollywood stars hurt law-abiding citizens with more stringent handgun and assault rifle control. I invite you to come to Texas and shoot with some responsible citizens to learn to appreciate our stance in all of this.
